So as I’ve opined in several recent posts I’m bored and worn out at my job and looking for a major chan ge. It’s still not a sure thing but I have had several phone interviews with one place in particular and they went well. Well enough that I have an on-site interview in the Bay area next week!!!!
I am getting damned excited about this!!!!
So to the question - I’ll be in the area Monday mid-day through Wednesday mid-day and busy all Tuesday afternoon. I was contemplating renting a scooter while I was out there for exploring the area. I’ve been to SF proper several times but never really done any wandering around the bay area. I have no problems with public transit and walking but I want to look at some areas to possibly live and not sure if t
ransit is the best way to do that. I also don’t want to end up spending a ton on
uber if I can avoid it for the couple days.
So better to rent a scooter or transit/uber while there for a couple days? I’m leaning towards the latter for practicality sake, but my wife suggested the former and it sure would be fun.
Night shot of the same bridge as above - I do love the area!

How good are you at splitting lanes, hiding your CC statement/activity from the wife, and not looking like a gosh darned touron?

Not worried about money too much (but with a quick google scooter rentals are $140 a day!) and I don’t care if I look like a moron tourist (had to look that one up) I’ve split lanes around town there, but likely won’t be doing it on the highway. That’ll take some warming up and likely practice when it comes for commute time in a couple months.
Th e Grom is just a scooter with a manual trans though. Which does definitely make it fun.

A young engineer named Miner
Joe grew restless on the farm
A boy filled with wonderlust who really meant no harm
He changed his vest
and shined his boots
And combed his dark hair down
And his mother cried as he walked out
Don’t take your gun
to town son
Leave your gun
at home Joe
Don’t take your gun
to town
He laughed and kissed his mom
And said your Miner
Joe’s a man
I can survey
as quick and straight as anybody can
But I wouldn’t shoot without a cause
I’d gun nobody down
But she cried again as he rode away
Don’t take your gun
to town son
Leave your gun
at home Joe
Don’t take your gun
to town
He sang a song as on he rode
His gun
hung at his hips
He rode into a harbor
town
A smile upon his lips
He stopped and walked into a bar
And laid his money down
But his mother’s words echoed again
Don’t take your gun
to town son
Leave your gun
at home Joe
Don’t take your gun
to town
He drank his first strong liquor then to calm his shaking hand
And tried to tell himself he had at last he had become a man
A 6'5" drag
queen
at his side began to laugh him down
And he heard again his mother’
s words
Don’t take your gun
to town son
Leave your gun at home Joe
Don’t take your gun
to town
Filled with rage then
Miner
Joe reached for his slide
rule
to draw [conclusions on the calculated
odds he’d get the job he desired
]
But the stranger drew her TASER
and fired
Before he even saw
As Miner
Joe fell to the floor
The crowd all gathered ‘round
And wondered at his final words [of the night]
Don’t take your gun to town son
Leave your gun at home Joe
Don’t take your gun
to town

The Bay Area as a whole is obscenely expensive to live in. Some of the more affordable places are going to be at least 30 miles outside of San Francisco proper.
I won’t ask what your budget is, you can look around housing and apartment costs and see for yourself what you’re in for. Sometimes the only way to get something reasonably priced is to sub-lease a single bedroom... And if you’re trying to do that in the city proper, it will still be insanely expensive.
There’s a lot to see and do as you well know by now, but definitely have to weigh income vs. living expenses. For the average person not in tech, it won’t make a whole lot of sense unless they inherited their living space.
-Someone living in a tiny studio in Vallejo, street parking only, for almost $1k/mo. And Vallejo has a lot of rough patches. There is a lot of redeeming qualities to the town as well, but it definitely has its crime issues... and $1k/mo for anything is actually cheap for the area anymore.

Scooter is okay but keep in mind you’ll be sharing the road with tourists, buses, and people rushing to be somewhere. If you’re going to ride make sure you know where you’re heading and don’t hesitate to maneuver.
Public transit is good around here and usually takes the same time as an Uber. Your best bet is public transit and Uber the last few miles if needed. Be aware of your surroundings and don’t walk through certain areas at night (Tenderloin and Mission) and you’ll be fine.

This is absolutely amazing!
Good guesses - but names Jacob and I’m a systems engineer so no slide rules for me :)

I live outside and work in St Louis, it’s cheap to buy a house here but crime is awful. Us and Detroit go back and forth as the most dangerous city in the US. We’re a city 1/10 the size of Chicago with 3/4 its annual murder rate.
SF is expensive for sure, but not much more than the other big cities in the US. I am in tech to that definitely makes it easier.
I am probably looking around San Jose and Fremont for housing, rents aren’t cheap for sure though. It’s just me and my Wife but we’ll probably be renting a small house and not an apartment.

That’s what I was thinking, train then uber if it’s more than a mile from the station (I’ll walk otherwise). The transit is a major plus for us, anytime I go there I take bart from the airport and beat the people that took cabs or uber to the hotel.

I actually tried that last time I was there!
It shut down about a mile away - they have an acceptable area of operation and if you wander too far our of it they shut down your scooter and charge you like $75.
Probably a bit further than a couple miles for housing, job is with a Silicon Valley tech company and houses right there are expensive as hell but if I end up in San Jose or Fremont it’s much more reasonable(m y cheap ass just laughed at myself comparing those numbers to what I paid in Missouri).

Haha - I could’ve sworn you were a Rolla (UMR/Missouri S&T) grad, but maybe you’ve told me in the past that you’re actually not...
Here’s Joe:

Yeah, I get sticker shock just going to places like Nashville :)
But as long as the numbers work out. Our company h as a grid of salaries for SF and they’re all 25% higher than anywhere else. 100% of that is due to housing and to a lesser degree, taxes. At the end of the day, your discretionary income for the same job is about identical. I’m frankly shocked we still pay for SF employees...
If they let you telecommute at least some of the time, just head east. I don’t know the CA market well enough to say where, but if you can get an hour away from the physical office, you’ll be in better shape. Then just go in once or twice a week for meetings during non-rush hours if you can. Idealistic, maybe.

I also went there and my wife graduated. LOL

That’s what it looks like with the first talk of numbers, I’ll basically make what I do here (which is comfortable) just adjusted for the higher costs.
Yeah all that will have to be figured out, we’ll probably get a short term rental (less than 6 months) and then figure out what works and either buy or a longer term lease.

I mean that doesn’t rule out that you’re crazy, but it helps.
I just had a minor heart attack though - I work with a dude named Dave that went to and his wife graduated from UMR, I’m pretty sure he isn’t a gear head so I should be safe!
